TEA ROOM BACKGROUND
The Shawnee Tea Room is a gathering place located in beautiful historic Shawnee, Colorado. The Tea Room is located next to the Shawnee post office right off of Highway 285. The building was originally constructed at the turn of the last century and opened as the Shawnee Mercantile. Shawnee became a popular summer resort, as the slow meandering river was great for fishing. The local economy was tourism, ranching, farming, logging, and winter jobs at the Maddox Ice Co., which vanished with the railroad in 1937. The Shawnee Cemetery is 350 feet to the east of the Tea Room. Since 1895, settler families of Tyler, Bonnifield, and Price have been interred. Civil War Union veteran, Private Wm. A. Bonnifield, rests there. Prior valley history includes: Ute hunting ground, a route to South Park's 1859-60's gold rush, and route of the 1878 Denver, South Park, and Pacific narrow-gauge railroad. Barbara Jerome Behl reopened the Tea Room on February 3rd of 2010 after a brief closure, and it has been open since. The Shawnee Tea Room now has a lot to offer: a cozy, relaxing atmosphere; antiques to look at; gifts to buy; food and drink; and spectacular views of the Platte River Valley. Wi-Fi is available to guests as they enjoy their tea. The Shawnee Tea Room is open to walk-ins but takes its pride in the tea parties it hosts. Tea parties are held for meetings, gatherings between friends, birthday parties, wedding and baby showers, and anniversary celebrations BY RESERVATION ONLY. SHAWNEE THEN AND NOW
Today in Historic Shawnee, a National Historic District, future plans are in the making for a walking tour of the historic houses and a possible museum. The grand view of this spectacular valley is still in its glory, the meandering North Fork of the South Platte River, fishing, signs of ranching, wildlife, the sleeping Indian rock formation, and, when you are looking carefully, you may see that the eagle still flies over and around this beautiful setting where the train once traveled. Shawnee Post Office has about 150 active post office boxes and approximately 400 surrounding area residents. The former Shawnee Trading Post, originally the Shawnee Mercantile, is now a Tea Room and Store that is open for special events, conversation, a place to gather, write a letter, shop, enjoy a cup, and utilize modern day Wi-Fi. The Shawnee Mountain Gallery after 30 plus years is alive and thriving. You will find the Shawnee Mountain Gallery, guest ranches, and Tea Room in Shawnee on the Park County Heritage and Artisans Trail. We hope that you will come and experience Shawnee then and now!
